FASHION'S COLOR TRENDS

Each spring and fall, designers present their latest ideas for what people will wear in the coming season. Often there seems to be a “trend” or common theme to the kinds of colors designers are choosing. How can they all be thinking alike?

Designers’ choices of colors depend on many things. Creative people often have an intuition that helps them sense what people may want months in the future.

There are also professionals and organizations whose focus is to predict color trends and to share those ideas among many industries. That way, when you buy a new turquoise sweater next year, you may be able to find socks or even a bicycle that matches!

There are two important color organizations:

The Color Marketing Group forecasts colors two to three years ahead. The group's 1,000 members from 20 countries meet at a conference twice a year to make predictions. Right now they are developing color forecasts for the year 2013! Colorists and designers observe and consider current influences including social issues, politics, the environment, the economy and cultural diversity.

Pantone produces numbered color chips that provide a way for designers to communicate about color.
